Single-use plastic packaging and tableware are widely used by professionals and individuals. They are essential in the catering sector because they are practical and light. They also make everyday life much easier. However, their consequent environmental impact must not be forgotten. This is, moreover, the main reason which prompted the government to prohibit their use. That said, it is possible to turn disposable plastic tableware into a greener alternative. The ultimate solution is recycling. How is it going then?

Yellow bin: collection of plastic waste

The yellow bin is intended to collect different types of household and industrial waste, including:

  • Plastic waste (cans, flasks, bottles, etc.);
  • Aerosols and metal cans; _ _
  • Letters, newspapers and magazines;
  • Bricks and boxes.

Items purchased from the disposable tableware shop can be placed in a yellow bin. Indeed, these disposable dishes will for the most part be intended to be recycled. Although this practice is uncommon, recycling one ton of plastic is equivalent to saving 700 liters of oil.

In reality, few recycling programs accept plastic because it is simply not cost-effective. In fact, plastic industrial and household waste is mostly intended to be incinerated. To recover them, the best solution is to reuse them, but this does not take into account the fact that they risk transferring toxic particles to food and drink.

Plastic dishes and packaging can be reused for about a week before being completely used up. As far as plates and cutlery are concerned, it is enough to maintain them well to ensure their longevity. Anyway, there are other habits to adopt to limit the use of plastic on a daily basis. The use of recyclable, biodegradable, and compostable disposable tableware is one example.

Rethinking the use of plastic with ecological alternatives

To stop the use of disposable plastic tableware, professionals offer tableware made from recyclable, recycled, biodegradable, or compostable materials. Indeed, there are now many choices to reduce hazardous waste. We find:

bamboo tableware

Bamboo is a biodegradable material that can be composted by an industrial or domestic process. It is ideal for designing disposable tableware because it is devoid of any undesirable chemical substance. A range of bamboo tableware consists of plates, forks, tumblers, miscellaneous utensils, and bowls.

cardboard tableware

Kraft cardboard is a material that can be recycled or recycled. It is the best alternative to single-use plastic because it has its advantages such as practicality and lightness. In addition, it is suitable for food contact and preserves the health of consumers. This is why it has become the preferred fast food packaging!

Tableware made from sugarcane pulp

This compostable tableware is as strong as it is aesthetic. Some models can even be edible so that after eating, users waste nothing. This solution is ideal for optimizing waste collection. _ _

PLA tableware

PLA or biodegradable plastic is made from plant materials, making it an eco-friendly option. It is available in several sizes and colors to meet all expectations. It should be noted, however, that this type of plastic is not thrown away like any other biodegradable product. The process is done differently.

Good habits to adopt

The main problem with plastic is that it generates a lot of pollution, while its use is highly limited. The best way to limit its impact is therefore to reduce this use. You can adopt the following good habits to work in an eco-responsible approach:

  • Buying in bulk: this is the solution for producing as little household waste as possible. Besides food, cosmetics can also be purchased in bulk.
  • Give preference to lightly packaged products: it is preferable to buy products only protected by cling film. Forget the trays, the blister and the dish which must be placed in yellow bins.
  • Use other materials: as stated above, there are now other more ecological alternatives to single – use plastic. Choose metal, stainless steel, cardboard and glass jars to reduce your carbon footprint.
